FMUN Secretary-General

Equal parts diplomat, advocate, and civil servant, the Secretary-General is a symbol of Florida Model United Nations' ideals and a spokesperson for the interests of the world's peoples, in particular the poor and vulnerable among them.

The Charter describes the Secretary-General as "chief administrative officer" of the organization, who shall act in that capacity and perform "such other functions as are entrusted" to him or her by the Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and other United Nations organs. The Charter also empowers the Secretary-General to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security". These guidelines both define the powers of the office and grant it considerable scope for action. The Secretary-General would fail if (s)he did not take careful account of the concerns of member states, but he/she must also uphold the values and moral authority of the Florida Model United Nations, and speak and act for peace, even at the risk, from time to time, of challenging or disagreeing with those same member states.

That creative tension accompanies the Secretary-General through day-to-day work that includes attendance at sessions of Florida Model United Nations bodies; consultations with world leaders, government officials, and others; keeping him/her in touch with the peoples of the organization's member states and informed about the vast array of issues of international concern that are on the organization's agenda. Each year, the Secretary-General issues a report on the work of the Florida Model United Nations that appraises its activities and outlines future priorities.

One of the most vital roles played by the Secretary-General is the use of his/her "good offices" -- steps taken publicly and in private, drawing upon his/her independence, impartiality and integrity, to prevent international disputes from arising, escalating or spreading.

Each Secretary-General also defines their role within the context of their particular time in office.

Statement of Vision

  1. To continue the relationship of the SG to the committees and to be more active with the attending students, and in assistance of the committee staff.
  2. To create a better system for the committee staff in terms of background guide, preparedness and training for conference.
  3. To provide more challenge for experienced delegates who attend with newer delegates, in order to increase attendance.
  4. To set out a theme for the conference and have committees that are both different but would help foster the learning experience we aim to provide for our delegates.
  5. To investigate how we could entertain more schools that are not involved with FMUN, whether that be in setting up more MUN’s and help with that process, or to invite schools that have not been.
  6. To contribute to the SG packet and founding documents to insure the success of future conferences!

Role and Responsibility

Conference Responsibilities

The Secretary-General will provide applicable UN reports and information to each of the FMUN committees (not including crisis committees). The SG appearance and content will be coordinated with the Director-General and committee staff. The SG may appoint one Under Secretary-General to assist in research and conference execution.
